At long last, Trouble & Bass is thrilled to release this four-track salvo from Distal, the Boss of the South. Atlanta-based Distal is one of America’s most talented and diverse producers, effortlessly traversing the worlds of juke, dubstep, Southern hip-hop, house and techno. He is both reverent of these genres and relentlessly new, as he’s proved on best-selling releases for Tectonic, Grizzly, Seclusiasis and his own label, Embassy Recordings.
This set has a deep purple palette: roughneck, sometimes melancholy, but with a cheeky sense of humor that’s pure Distal. The title track “Vampire Lightning” is gully peak-time juke. Our little buddy goes late night in the lab, beakers bubbling over with corrosive acid sounds spilling onto the shakers and snares skittering around the floor. This gets backed up by “Cherry Red,” a track as cool as the paint on your tricked-out Cadillac. Miss Cherry is a stripped-down gangster boogie that sounds like 10 zombies in a synchronized Crank Dat Superman.
Following on, a number that perfectly shows Distal’s allegiance to the dirty, dirty. Get your daiquiri ready and roll out to the heroic “Green Lantern,” a dramatic and soaring slice of thug romance with beautiful synths, snare rolls for days and bass for your trunk.
